Switching Domain Registrars: Made Simple

Moving your domain registration to a new provider is straightforward if you follow some key steps:

Check if domain can be transferred

Before starting, verify your domain:

  • Was registered more than 60 days ago
  • Has no balance due at the current registrar
  • Does not have a transfer lock enabled

Remove any transfer restrictions

Log into your account at the current registrar and disable any transfer locks, theft protection, or other blocks on moving your domain.

Get authorization code

At the current registrar, retrieve the EPP or authorization code required for domain transfers. This grants permission.

Initiate transfer at new registrar

At the new registrar, search for your domain and start the transfer process. Enter the authorization code when prompted.

Confirm and finalize transfer

When you get the transfer confirmation from the new registrar, validate the transfer by clicking the confirmation link within 5 days.

Update nameservers and DNS

Once completed, update your domain's nameservers and DNS records at the new registrar to point to your hosting.

Renew annually

Going forward, renew your domain through the new registrar to avoid expiration. Mark renewal dates on your calendar.

Following this process will allow you to seamlessly switch registrars and continue uninterrupted site operation.
