Understanding 1Gbit and 10Gbit Port Speeds

Q: What do 1Gbit or 10Gbit mean for my VPS or Dedicated Server?
A: These are network port speeds, indicating how fast your server can send or receive data.

1 Gbit (Gigabit) = up to 125 MB/s (Megabytes per second)

10 Gbit = up to 1,250 MB/s

💡 Important: People often mistakenly think 1 Gbit = 1000 MB/s, but that’s incorrect. Here's why:

Tip: You can use an online calculator to convert between Gbps/Gbit and MB/s. Check it out here: Gbps to MB/s Calculator - https://www.gbmb.org/gbps-to-mbs

Understanding Gbit vs. GBps:

Gbit/s = Gigabits per second (Gbit or Gbps are the same)

1 Gbit/s = 125 MB/s (1 Gbps = 125 Megabytes per second)

GBps = Gigabytes per second

1 GBps = 8 Gbps (1 GBps = 8 Gigabits per second)

Quick Reference:

UnitFull NameEqual ToUsed For
GbpsGigabits per second1 Gbps = 125 MB/sNetwork/port speed
Gbit/sGigabits per secondSame as GbpsAlternate abbreviation
GBps (G)Gigabytes per second1 GBps = 8 GbpsFile transfers/storage speed

Bits vs. Bytes – The Key Difference:

1 Byte = 8 bits

To convert Gbit to MB/s, divide by 8.

Port SpeedReal Speed in MB/s
1 Gbit125 MB/s
10 Gbit1,250 MB/s

Q: Why don’t I always see full speeds?

💡 Important: We often provide much higher actual speeds than the advertised port speeds. For example:

  • A VPS or Dedicated Server with a 1 Gbit (125 MB/s) connection can deliver speeds of up to 700 MB/s (±).
  • A 10 Gbit (1,250 MB/s) Dedicated Server may reach speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s (±).
  • These higher speeds depend on various factors, including server capacity and network conditions.
