Getting Started with a Domain for Your New Website

Select your domain

Come up with a short, catchy domain name relevant to your site's focus. Common endings are .com, .org, or .net. You could also consider new domain extensions like .site, .blog, or .shop.

Check domain availability

Use your registrar's domain search to see if the name you want is unregistered. Try adding keywords or hyphens if your first choice isn't available.

Register your domain

When you find an available domain you like, follow the registrar's checkout process to buy and register it. Registration periods usually range from 1-10 years.

Configure DNS

To point your domain to shared hosting:

  • Get the nameservers from your web host, and enter them in your domain registrar's settings.

To point your domain to a cloud server:

  • Log into your cloud provider and retrieve your server's IP address.
  • Make an A record linking your domain name to the cloud server IP.

Renew and manage

Renew your domain registration annually so it doesn't expire. Update nameservers or A records if you switch web hosts.

Launch your site!

With your domain purchased and configured, you can start creating an awesome new website!
